Biology of the Cell Young Investigator Award winner

Coralie Spiegelhalter

After obtaining her BSc degree at the University of Strasbourg, France, in 2004, Coralie Spiegelhalter first graduated in Biotech and was then awarded a degree in Biophotonics from the "Ecole Nationale de Chimie Physique Biologie", Paris, France. In the meantime, she learned light and electron microscopy at the Imaging Center of the "Institut de Génétique et de Biologie Moléculaire et Cellulaire" (I.G.B.M.C.), Illkirch, France, a facility with more than 12 scientific teams studying the genetics and cell biology of human diseases.

For two years now, this 22-year-old young scientist has been involved in the development of new tools and protocols for correlative light and electron microscopy. Combining high-resolution light microscopy with cryomethods for electron microscopy (high-pressure freezing) she is focusing on techniques allowing correlation between the dynamics of living cultured cells and their ultrastructure. Her protocols are now being used for fundamental research on myopathies, cancer and cell biology.
